What is this?

What is this? A website? A newsletter? OK, you have questions.

AI Insider is produced by Michelle Johnson, Emerita Associate Professor, Journalism, Boston University, ChatGPT-4, Bing and Bard. And sometimes other bots such as Claude or Perplexity. (Yes, really.)

How’d that happen? Well, this baby actually was birthed on Facebook. When ChatGPT dropped in November of 2022, I got really curious and started delving deeply into ChatGPT, Bing, Bard, Dall-E, Dream Studio, MidJourney and whatever other apps I was hearing about.

So, let’s be clear. I AM NOT an expert in AI. I’m an interested user who’s retired with too much time on my hands.

I started to share info and my impressions about AI with my friends on Facebook, and they clamored for a newsletter. Did I not just say that I’m retired? I like being retired. I’m not looking for a full-time job. Writing a regular newsletter is a full-time job.

So, to appease the clamorers, I offered to do an occasional newsletter and started posting it on Facebook. I did this because I realized I could get the chatbots to write some of this, thereby lightening my load. Hence the multiple bylines.

You can thank ChatGPT for the name of the publication. Totally made up by a chatbot.

Anyway, three editions in, I realized that Facebook is a poor publishing platform for a newsletter. As a former journalist, I’m used to having more control, so I ported this over to WordPress (which I used to teach my students), and the rest is history.

How often can you expect a new edition of AI Insider? I can’t tell you. It depends on whether I’m in the mood to crank one out. If there’s lots of news going on in the AI world, I’ll probably be more active. If not, I have other things to do. Like generating graphics for memes on MidJourney and Adobe Firefly.

If you don’t like the content, nice seeing you. Bye. There’s no complaint department. There is, however, always room for Q&As, and civil discussion. Feel free to post a comment if it falls in the aforementioned categories. Or just say hi. Or not. Above all, enjoy your time here.
