Catherine Rideaux

Intelligent and athletic. Two perfect words describe scholar-athlete Catherine Rideaux. She is the art editor of the yearbook at Tabor Academy in Marion, where she is a junior.

Catherine is enthusiastic and eager to learn a great deal about journalism so she can begin a newspaper at her school.

Catherine, 16, is of Cape Verdean, French Creole and Irish descent. She lives with her mom and older sister, Andrea, who participated in the 1994 UMass High School Journalism Program.

Catherine's school activities and interests include the Handbell Choir, Yearbook Committee art editor and string ensemble, with which she plays the violin. With the Speech and Debate Club, she attended a national event in Chicago.

Catherine is part of the soccer and track teams, lectures at her local church and enjoys taking dance lessons. She plans to attend either Syracuse or B.U. She will pursue a career in the medical field to become an orthopedic surgeon, but she is equally interested in publications and journalism.

"I think that being enrolled in this journalism program will give me more experience in publications, and it will give me a valuable chance to express myself as a writer and journalist," she said.
